Bing Copeland goes way back. He began surfing in 1949, at age 13, at the Manhattan Beach pier with his friend Greg Noll, and was involved in many of the big developments in surfboard design throughout the 60s and 70s. He's a man who's been there, done it and knows all there is to know about making surfboards.

These days Bing plays more of an advisory role, leaving the manufacturing to a passionate and highly skilled team headed by Matt Calvani - without doubt one of the world's finest shapers.

Before joining Bing, head shaper Calvani made state of the art shortboards with Dennis Jarvis of Spyder inbetween spells working alongside Hap Jacobs and Becker. So it's no surprise that the short and mid-range boards that have been added to the Bing range are of the same elite class as the longboards they're more traditionally known for.

On his approach to making boards, Matt Calvani offers the following:
"My thinking behind most designs is based on what advantages you'll gain in various conditions. I see trends come and go and not all of them are functional. If I don't see an advantage to a trend, then it's not really advancing surfing or board design. I love to look at the past and find out what they were thinking and the theory behind their board design to find out what was valid and functional. Some just need a little modern tweaking. The magic board will be an ever evolving process that keeps my job exciting."
