Donald Takayama, pioneer and owner of Hawaiian Pro Designs Inc. has been surfing, designing and manufacturing surfboards for over 50 years. He is a five time United States of America surfing champion but these days competes only for fun whenever his schedule permits.
The sport of surfing has been his life! It is through his involvement in this exhilarating sport that he has been fortunate to develop many long lasting friendships whilst at the same time appreciating all those who have believed in and enjoyed his masterly work.
From a humble beginning on the south shore of the Hawaiian island of Oahu, at the tender age of 13, out of necessity he taught himself how to shape a surfboard in the backyard of his family home. Moving to California in the late fifties, he had the opportunity to hone his skills by working with, and learning from, some of the pioneers of the surfboard manufacturing industry. Soon after, “Hawaiian Pro Designs – by Donald Takayama” was born, and today he is both revered and respected in all corners of the world as a true gentleman, surfboard master craftsman and surfer of legendary status.
As Donald says – “I am proud to be a part of the industry that I have watched grow into global proportions. As small as the network in the surfing industry really is, the impact of the lifestyle has created it’s own culture, which today has evolved into a multitude of ideas for business and pleasure. I have lived my life attempting to best mix both into what I do.”
“Be sure to enjoy your surfing days, and remember, the best surfer in the water is the one with the biggest smile!”
Mahalo.
