About Rip Curl...

Rip Curl was originally founded in 1967 as a surfboard company, but in 1970 founders Doug Warbrick and Brian Singer spotted a gap in the emerging wetsuit market ... the rest, as they say, is history.

While surfboards at that time in Australia were being made by a multitude of companies, wetsuits were being made by only two, one of whom made them for divers and had only a marginal commercial interest in surfing.

Their decision wasn’t purely commercial however; they wanted to help make cold water surfing a more pleasurable, viable passtime for their fellow surfers. And we can safely say, after nearly 50 years of pushing the boundaries of wetsuit production, they’ve done that.

The name ‘Rip Curl’ was taken from an off the cuff message scrawled by Warbick on a second-hand surfboard in 1968. It read “Rip Curl Hot Dog.” Pretty much meaningless, but cool nevertheless.

By today’s standards, the original Rip Curl wetsuits were primitive, but they differed from other manufacturers in that they carried out research and development with surfers, a practice which underpins their success to this day.
