Who watched the recent world tour event at Snapper Rocks? Those of you out there that did may have noticed the magic carpet under Stu Kennedy’s feet? He was riding a Slater Designs/Firewire Tomo Sci-Phi 5’7″. The board looked so balanced under his feet and allowed him take out some big names along the way, one notable name was his boss Kelly Slater that now owns Firewire Surfboards.. oops!!
The Sci-phi will be available in our shop from May/June and currently we are taking pre-orders, so if you fancy a slice of Daniel Thompson’s modern planning hull magic under your own feet and would like to reserve one give us a call at the shop on 01736 757025 or Email firstname.lastname@example.org
Since Kelly Slater purchased a majority share of Firewire surfboards in early 2015, he has been busy working on 3 new models for his side line company ‘Slater Designs’.
Slater Designs will be utilizing tried and tested Firewire surfboards build methods, and have a design input from renowned shapers such as, Daniel Thompson and Greg Webber.
Initially there will be three unique models in the Slater designs line up that will cover all bases. The new range of Slater Designs boards should be with us in the shop around May 2016.
The line up..
Slater Designs x Daniel ‘TOMO’ Thompson/Sci-Phi
A smaller wave pocket rocket that will be well suited to everyday beach break/small point wave conditions.
Kelly rides 5’6” X 18 3/4” X 2 1/4” 24.8L
Slater Designs x Daniel ‘TOMO’ Thompson/Omni
A versatile all-rounder for every type of wave, Beach, Reef and point.
Kelly rides 5’3” X 18 3/4” X 2 5/16” 24.8L
Slater Designs x Greg Webber/The Banana
Best in waves with power and good shape to get the most out the design, this board feels at home in the barrel!
Kelly rides 5’10” X 18 3/8” X 2 1/4” 25.8L
We are now taking deposits on all of the above Slater design models, they are expected to land in store May 2016. It is advised to get in there quick to save disappointment as we have had a lot of interest.
Ladies and Gentlemen, behold the Vanguard, Firewire’s bold new model – the brainchild of pioneering Lennox Head shaper/ripper Daniel Thomson (Tomo). We spoke to Firewire head honcho Nev Hyman today and he said:
“I’ve been riding this for weeks and it’s f—–g amazing! Problem is I’m going to have to rip up the shaping manual.”
We’ll admit, we were somewhat dubious, but after testing it ourselves for a few days we can confirm that it’s a great board. It takes a few waves to get used to (if you’re used to riding thrusters then maybe start off using the Vanguard with three fins before switching to it’s preferred four fin configuration) but it’s well worth it. It’s fast, smooth, forgiving, versatile and fun. We haven’t fully got our heads around why it works, but it most certainly does. Looks like being a game-changer!
